Different hydropower components require different flood checks. Intake walls, diversion weir, cofferdam, and powerhouse area do not always use the same return period.

Recommended workflow

  1. List all components and their hydraulic exposure.
  2. Assign return period based on consequence, project standard, and client criteria.
  3. Calculate flood level for each return period using hydraulic model or rating curve.
  4. Check freeboard and structural safety for governing cases.
  5. Prepare one summary table showing Q, water level, and adopted design level.

Quick design table

ItemCheck
Diversion weirUsually checked for high return period flood and safe overtopping behavior.
Intake platformCheck accessibility and gate operation during flood.
Temporary worksSeparate construction-stage flood criteria.
Do not mix construction-stage flood and permanent design flood in the same table without clear labels.
